It’s probably a bit too cold to dip one’s toes in the water but the beaches are ideal for long walks and collecting shells. A big plus: Accommodation is much cheaper in the winter than during the main season and places are less crowded than during summer. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you should come here!

CAPTIVA ISLAND Captiva Island is the sister island of the better known and much larger island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The beauty of Captiva Island: It is quieter than Sanibel, the water is clearer and the sand of the beaches is finer. In addition, the island is so narrow that you can see the sea in both directions from a lot of places. However, the island is also a bit more expensive than Sanibel. So if you are rather thrifty, spending a holiday here is not recommended.

Das Schöne an Captiva Island: Sie ist ruhiger als Sanibel, das Wasser ist klarer und der Sand der Strände feiner. Zudem ist die Insel so schmal, dass du von vielen Orten aus in beide Richtungen aufs Meer blicken kannst. Allerdings: Die Insel ist auch etwas teurer als Sanibel. Für Sparfüchse ist der Urlaub dort also nicht zu empfehlen.

SIESTA KEYSiesta Key, located just a two-hour drive north of Captiva Island, offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the country: Siesta Beach. In 2016, the entire infrastructure of the beach area was refurbished. In addition to the azure blue sea, a sandy beach white as sugar and a beautiful esplanade, Siesta Beach also has volleyball courts, tennis courts, a playground in the shades and a picnic area. The ideal place for a beach holiday with the whole family!

If you want a broader experience than going on long beach hikes, you can book a dolphin watching tour, enjoy numerous water sport activities or take a day trip to Charleston, which is only 43 miles away. In 2016, readers of the magazine Travel + Leisure voted and the small town with its southern charm was proclaimed “the best city in the U.S.”, and even the “best city in the world” the year before. If that’s not reason enough to visit the region!

Around 1900, influential families like the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts and the Pulitzers spent their holidays here. Fortunately, today you don’t need to be a billionaire to afford a stay on the archipelago!
